The University of Arkansas first fielded a football team in 1894, they were known as the Cardinals. In 1908 Hugo Bezdek was hired as the first full time paid coach. Bezdek took the cardinals to a 5 - 4 season in 1908, but in 1909 he led them to a 7 - 0 campaign that included victories over LSU and Oklahoma. Arkansas scored 186 points that year and only allowed 18 points all year. After the final game of the year against LSU the team returned to Fayetville on the train and when it arrived, Bezdek addressed the students, he said his team had played "like a wild band of Razorback Hogs". The students loved the phrase so much they voted to change the mascot so in 1910 the "Razorbacks" were born. |
